welcome to the explainer today we're celebrating the absolute rock stars of Thomas a Edison Middle School so what is it actually take to conquer the 2026 skills USA California state conference let's dive in it kicked off April 9th in Ontario behind that goofy mascot some Fierce career-defining competition was brewing take the CO2 dragster contest this isn't just racing folks it demands  engineering and crazy precise records these cars meet a tough 2.5 oz limit rocketing down a 65 ft track time to the thousandth of a second plus they face some brutal performance tests like actual wind tunnels and intense rolling friction calculations that makes Kiera Moreno's snaring silver and Adrian Martinez locking down 4 place truly Monumental wins for Edison next up the knowledge assessments contestants battle a grueling online testing platform over 3 intense days now against those totally daunting odds Matthew Bautista Hernandez pulled off some something completely unprecedented for his age get this he was the only Middle School student to complete the entire skills USA certification challenge seriously impressive mastering all those personal workplace and technical skills is a giant puzzle but man Matthew just crushed it moving on to mobile robotics this contest tests problem-solving using fully built reprogrammable robots it's wild teams actually use their own engineering notebooks and non-powered hand tools to literally modify robots on the Fly under all that pressure Adrian Perez Florez and Matthew Castillo stepped up and captured the gold medal seen their names shining up on that big arena screen cemented them as true California state champions next stop the national leadership skills conference in Atlanta Georgia from May 31st to June 6th 2026 these kids are already state champions imagine what kind of incredible future they're going to engineer for us next
